Rest is not a time out.
Rest needs to have a new definition because it felt like it was a punishment. Rest isn’t being sent to your room. Rest isn’t going to bed and sleeping all day.
If you happen to be going through a tough time or a phase of burn out, rest is very important. Stress, adrenal fatigue and being on high alert all the time takes a toll on your body and you need more rest.
We confuse rest with the word, stop. We are too busy to stop and so we keep pushing through. We need a phase of slowing down, restoring and recharging to get our strength back.
Perhaps we can exchange the word ‘rest’ for ‘slowing down’ or ‘savoring’.
If we slow down and savor we can rest while in the moment. We slow time down and allow ourselves to experience things like cooking.
Naps are great but there are times when we need to actually experience hours not working.
What would you do with hours not working?
Rest doesn’t always mean staying in bed. Even when we take a walk, it can feel like something we need to hurry through to get to the next to do item. To take time and savor your experience on the walk is being in the moment. Don’t worry about how much time it is taking and just appreciate the current time. Allow the moment to go all the way inside your soul.
When you slow down time, your day feels longer. Your struggle with time relaxes.
If you feel behind it may be time to take the time to slow time down by being more in the moment. This is how you get out of fight or flight and actually feel like you are living and not just surviving your day.
“When you approach rest, what do you need rest from?”
Take time to invest in what you need more of. What do you need more of?
